All members (grades 4-12) must be FSQA certified to show/sell animals at Westfair, Ak-Sar-Ben, or the Iowa State Fair. Anyone ages 12-18 will be required to take the test. Workshops will only be offered to members ages 9-11 years old. Ages are calculated from January 1 of the current year.
Members who are 12-14 years old will take the 'intermediate' test. You must pass with a 70%. Test questions are multiple choice and true/false. All test questions come from the FSQA member's manual. A member who passes the 'intermediate' test will be certified until the age of 15.
Members who are 15-18 years old will take the 'advanced' test. You must pass with a 70%. Test questions are multiple choice and true/false. All test questions come from the FSQA member's manual. A member who passes the 'advanced' test will be certified until they are out of 4-H.
Those taking the test have three tries to pass in one sitting. If a member fails three times in one sitting, they will need to schedule another time to come back to re-take the test.
Members who are 9-11 years old are must attend a workshop each year in order to be certified. The certification for 9-11 year olds expires each year. Members only need to attend one workshop (we offer two to help families with scheduling).
**You must contact the Exension Office at 366-7070 or email us at jenvin@iastate.edu to reserve a spot for testing or workshop times. This will ensure that staff will be available. If there are no members who have reserved a time (especially for testing), then the date will be cancelled.
