Job Openings:

  • Accepting applicatons for a temporary, part-time Summer Aide to assist 20 hours per week with various office activities from June 1, 2015 - July 31, 2015.  Qualifications include a minimum of a high school diploma, knowledge of 4-H, strong communication and organizational skills, up-to-date computer and technology skills, and the ability to work some evenings and weekends.  Submit application with references to the Webster County Extension and Outreach office by Monday, February 2, 2015.  Job description and application are available at  the Extension office (217 S. 25th St., Fort Dodge, IA) or you may download the 2015 Summer Aide Application and 2015 Summer Aide Job Description and return to the Extension office.

In support of Money Smart Week, the Iowa Bankers Association is sponsoring the annual Money Smart Kid Essay Contest in partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.  The winner will help promote financial literacy for Money Smart Week.  Students in grades 7-11 may enter the contest by answering the following essay question:  What is the biggest obstacle to saving your money?  What technological and/or banking solutions might help you and your friends begin to save?  The deadline to submit an essay is March 27, 2015 and a winner will be notified by April 10, 2015.  Click on Money Smart Kid Essay to download an application.  For any questions, contact Barb Wollan, Human Sciences Extension & Outreach Specialist, Family Finance at 515-832-9597 or bwollan@iastate.edu.

 

ISU Extension & Outreach and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension are teaming up to offer a Feedlot Roundtable session at four Iowa locations on Thursday, February 12, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  The northwest Iowa site will be at the Calhoun County Extension office in Rockwell City located at 521 - 4th Street, Rockwell City.  Participants should pre-register by calling the Calhoun Co. Extension office at 712-297-8611 no later than Tuesday, February 10th.  A $10 fee which covers the proceedings, meeting costs, and refreshments is payable the day of session.More information can be found at the Iowa Beef Center.

 

The Iowa Beef Center will be offering several workshops around the state focusing on choices in feedlot facilities.  The workshops will overview the types of facilities, advantages, disadvantages, and review the research that has been conducted.  Using several scenarios workshop participants will work on making choices for an operation including financing decisions, measuring cost benefit, production and environmental risk management.  Tools and decision aids to help producers analyze the choices of facility type and cost will be used and available to participants.  All workshops unless noted will run from 9:45 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.  Producers can reserve their spot and meal for $20 by contacting the following:  02/18/15:  Borluag Center Meeting Room, Northeast Research Farm, Nashua.  Contact:  Russ Euken, 641-923-2856 or reuken@iastate.edu02/26/15:  Hansen Ag Studen Learning Center, 2516 Mortensen Rd., Ames.  Contact:  Russ Euken, 641-923-2856 or reuken@iastate.edu03/25/15:  Carroll Co. There has been a lot of progress in beef cattle genetics and genetic tools in the last few years.  Cow calf producers have an opportunity to learn how they can make genetic improvements in their herd at meetings scheduled for February 20th in Garner at the Pizza Ranch and March 5th in Iowa Falls at the Ellsworth College Agriculture and Renewable Energy Center. Both meetings will start at 9:45 am and end at 2:30 pm.  There is no fee to attend but  pre-registration is needed to reserve a meal.  Contact Hancock County Extension in Garner 641-923-2856 to register for the February 20th meeting in Garner and Hardin County Extension in Iowa Falls 641-648-4850 to register for the March 5th meeting.

 

 

The 37th Annual Garden Seminar will be held Saturday, March 7th, 9:00 a.m. - Noon at the BioScience Building, Iowa Central Community College, Fort Dodge.  There will be two programs:  "Bees as Pollinators" by Eve Vanden Broek, Back-toBasics Beekieeping Club and "The Benefits of Organic Gardening" by Joe McNally, Iowa Arboretum Horticulture Project Manager.  Admission is free.

 

 

Required Morel Mushroom Certification Workshops Offered in April. Interested in hunting and selling morel mushrooms in Iowa? If so, plan to take this three-hour class in April from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and be certified to sell morel mushrooms legally within the state.

 

The Family Nutrition Program (FNP) is a FREE program available to families in Webster County to help parents provide nutritious food for their families, leading to healthy children and strong families.  Family Nutrition Program (FNP) staff work with pregnant teens, families with young children and youth. Program staff meet with participants one-on-one and in small groups. Lessons are selected depending on the needs and wants of the participants.
