On February 17, 2009 your current TV signal will be converted over to a digital signal.  The change will free up bands of the broadcast spectrum allowing it to be used by broadcasters and public emergency teams.  The digital signal will produce a more clear picture and better sound.

Many consumers will be impacted by the change, but they do not have to buy a new TV.  Converter boxes will be available for individuals who have an outside antenna.  The cost of a box is will range from $50 to $70.  The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), part of the United States Department of Commerce, will be issuing households a coupon for a $40 discount.  The coupons will be available in 2008. Consumers will be eligible for 2 coupons.  Check the following websites after January 1, 2008 for information on how to apply:  www.dtvtransition.org  or www.dtv.gov.

The FCC recently required cable and satellite providers to continue to convert basic cable to the old signal until 2012.  Check with them for other options.  Most TV models now for sale are digital ready; however, it is a good idea to ask if the TV is “DTV-compatible”.
