Washington County Extension Offered Bus Trip to Shadow Days
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences presented high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors in Washington County with an opportunity to experience a day in the life of a college student. This event, known as Shadow Days, was hosted by the Ag Ambassadors student organization and took place on November 4th and 5th. This event was a perfect orientation to ISU for any student with an interest in any of the majors in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
Shauna Sieren, office assistant for Washington County Extension, and a chaperone took two vans and 17 students to Ames to participate in Shadow Days. Interested students got an inside look at Iowa State University during this two day event, and a full schedule of activities and entertainment.

At the conclusion of these activities, students retired for the evening with their host where they had a chance to stay in different forms of college housing.
Day 2: On November 5th students met for breakfast, attended classes with current ISU students and took a campus tour. Following the tour, lunch was served and students were able to meet the dean and other faculty members. In the afternoon, students met with a faculty advisor to ask questions they might have.

The students and their parents appreciated the opportunity to attend this event with other Washington County students and at a very affordable price. Comments from those attending included: “It’s a very nice campus,” “I got a feeling of what the campus was like, what the student body was like, and what the staff was like,” “I got to see what staying in a dorm is like,” “I learned that Iowa State has a study abroad program,” “It helped me narrow down the number of majors I was considering.”
Washington County Extension hopes to offer this county wide opportunity again next year.

Meet Shauna Sieren-Washington County's ISU Recruiter

Most college bound high school seniors are thinking about the same things this time of year. Where should I go to college? Which one is right for me? How do I find out what a college is really like? Who do I talk to?
Washington County Extension is providing a new service to local high school seniors by providing a local connection to Iowa State University. Shauna (Brinning) Sieren, office assistant at the Washington County Extension office is a 2001 graduate of Iowa State University in the college of agriculture. Sieren grew up on a farm southwest of West Chester and attended Keota schools.
“I knew where I wanted to go to college but many students have no idea what college they want to attend,” said Sieren. “Our office is the Iowa State University extension in Washington County. It is logical that we help students learn about ISU and give them some contacts. I am here to help do what I can,” she added.
