Pesticide application
March 11, 2014

The last opportunity to attend a private pesticide training in Washington is April 14.  The session will be held at the Washington County Extension Office and will begin at 7:00 pm.  This is continuing education for Private Pesticide Applicators. Two hours of instruction is required annually for re-certification.

Washington County 4-H County Council will be sponsoring an IJBBA sanctioned open cattle show on Saturday, April 19 at the Washington County Fairgrounds.  This event is open to youth of all ages up to 21.  Exhibitors do not need to be a member of the IJBBA or a member of 4-H, however, members of the IJBBA will receive points.  Click here for flyer and registration form.

April 4, 2014

Washington County 4th - 6th grades 4-H'ers are invited to attend Region 15 4-H Jr. Camp June 10-12.  Junior members will buss together to the Iowa 4-H Center in Madrid for camping adventures and outdoor fun!

They will enjoy air conditioned cabins, wall climging, creek walks, zip lining, team challenges and campfires.  Iowa, Keokuk, and Johnson County 4-H'ers will also attend, so it's a perfect time to make new 4-H friends.

Canning season will be here before we know it.  Washington County Extension is offering testing of dial gauge pressure canners this year.  Pressure canners with a dial-type pressure gauge should be tested each year for accuracy.  Canner lids will be tested from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. on June 9 and June 23. 

2014 Custom Rate Survey

The 2014 Iowa Farm Custom Rate Survey followed the recent trend of small, but consistent increases in rates each year. According to William Edwards, retired Iowa State University Extension and Outreach economist, most operations showed increases of 4 to 6 percent over the average rates in the 2013 survey. The survey includes information on tillage, planting, spraying and harvesting grain or forages. Also included are values for miscellaneous services and machinery rental.

The Iowa Senate has launched the centennial celebration of the Smith-Lever Act, the founding legislation of the nationwide Cooperative Extension System. Representatives from ISU Extension and Outreach took part in the event at the Iowa Capitol. Watch the video.
