Pesticide application

The last opportunity to attend a private pesticide training in Washington is April 14.  The session will be held at the Washington County Extension Office and will begin at 7:00 pm.  This is continuing education for Private Pesticide Applicators. Two hours of instruction is required annually for re-certification.  

2014 Custom Rate Survey

The 2014 Iowa Farm Custom Rate Survey followed the recent trend of small, but consistent increases in rates each year. According to William Edwards, retired Iowa State University Extension and Outreach economist, most operations showed increases of 4 to 6 percent over the average rates in the 2013 survey. The survey includes information on tillage, planting, spraying and harvesting grain or forages. Also included are values for miscellaneous services and machinery rental.

Iowa State Fair

The Iowa State Fair has announced the call for entries for The Way We Live Award. They are looking for six farm families to highlight during the Iowa State Fair. The families must show dedication to animal agriculture in their daily lives and the lives of their family members. Deadline for application is May 1.  Click here for brochure.

Jim Frier

Jim Frier's efforts set the stage for current Washington County programs which remain strong today based on the solid foundation Jim helped build. Washington County’s rich history of Extension and 4-H can be traced back to Jim Frier.
Jim served as the Washington County Extension Director from 1960-1992 – the longest term of any Extension Director in Washington County history.

  • Agricultural economics and business resources to help make sound management decisions for your business or farming operation.

  • In-depth self-study courses and resource centers that provide management education to agricultural producers, educators and service providers.

  • Providing timely, critically objective information to producers, professionals and agribusinesses concerning the application of important developments in agricultural law and taxation and a primary source of professional educational training in agricultural law and taxation.

  • One-on-one financial counseling, computerized analysis of the farm business, and referral to other extension programs or outside services that may be useful in farm financial planning.
