ISU Forestry Extension
September 19, 2014

A forestry field day will be held October 22 on the Jerry Rediger Farm located at 1256 Kiwi Ave in rural Kalona.  Registration begins at 12:45 pm with the program beginning at 1:00 pm.  Topics will include: when and how to prune and thin plantation trees, how to grade timber, and a tour of the farm which utilizes a direct seeding method.

The 16-week on-line course on "Transitioning to Organic Agriculture" will be offered beginning on Tuesday, August 26, from 6 - 9 pm every Tuesday night through December 2.  The cost for farmers is $50 for the course or $10/session.    See Flyer.

2014 Custom Rate Survey

The 2014 Iowa Farm Custom Rate Survey followed the recent trend of small, but consistent increases in rates each year. According to William Edwards, retired Iowa State University Extension and Outreach economist, most operations showed increases of 4 to 6 percent over the average rates in the 2013 survey. The survey includes information on tillage, planting, spraying and harvesting grain or forages. Also included are values for miscellaneous services and machinery rental.

  • In-depth self-study courses and resource centers that provide management education to agricultural producers, educators and service providers.

  • Providing timely, critically objective information to producers, professionals and agribusinesses concerning the application of important developments in agricultural law and taxation and a primary source of professional educational training in agricultural law and taxation.

  • One-on-one financial counseling, computerized analysis of the farm business, and referral to other extension programs or outside services that may be useful in farm financial planning.
