Taylor County Extension provides relevant programs that support healthy people, healthy environments, and healthy economies.

Iowa State University Extension serves Iowans through six program areas:

  • Agriculture and Natural Resources
  • Business and Industry
  • Communities
  • Families
  • 4-H & Youth Development
  • Continuing Education

Taylor County Extension delivers educational opportunities that make life better, healtheir, safer, and more profitable for individuals and communities in our county.  This past year, Taylor County received a Harkin Wellness Grant promoting indivdual wellness.  Community groups, partnering with the Department of Public Health, with funds from the Centers for Disease Control, provided a vast majority of Taylor County residents with many healthy lifestyle opportunities to better their health and well-being.

  • Horizons encourages positive change in Bedford - There's a change in Bedford, good change -- thanks to local citizen participation in the Horizon Program.   Three action items identified at a community action forum yielded three motivated committees addressing the community's internal communication, merging Bedford Area Economic Development with the Bedford Chamber/Main Street, and exploring the internet service in the area.  Two of the goals are almost accomplished!
  • Growing Strong Families Program - 82 families with children birth to five years of age learned about portion sizes, super-sizing, general nutrition, dental health as it relates to nutrition, and getting the families interested in physical activity efforts.
  • Cow-calf producers utilize co-products to best advantage - Taylor County beef producers have been asking lots of questions on using ethanol bi-products with their cattle operation.  Thirty-five local beef producers learned about the nutritive make-up of co-products in beef cow rations, and new research involving storage options.

Taylor County Extension Council

Extension Council members are elected by the Taylor County voters to serve four year terms.  They oversee the planning, preparation, marketing and delivery of the Extension education program in the county.  Every county in Iowa has an Extension Council.  Extension Councils provide, through unique partnership with Iowa State University and other federal and state organizations, researched-based, unbiased information and education to help county citizens make better decisions.
