Low resource families find it challenging to choose and prepare healthy foods within a limited budget. Iowa State University Family Nutrition Program (FNP) helps families in Tama County learn to make informed choices about low-cost, nutritious foods; to better manage family finances; and to become more self-sufficient.

FNP in Tama County is a  free nutrition education program of ISU Extension available to families with children 0-10 years and with low-resources.  Eating Smart - Being Active is the curriculum used for the FNP, Family Nutrition Program, which is part of the Food Stamp Nutrition Education.  The lessons are designed to give families useful information to help them make choices about eating smart and staying healthy,  including the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPyramid.  The one-on-one sessions include information about planning and preparing inexpensive tasty meals, food safety, how to include more fruits and vegetables in the diet and much more.

The 8 topics are:

  • Get Moving (families staying active)
  • Plan, Shop, Save
  • Vary Your Veggies...Focus On Fruit
  • Make Half Your Grains Whole
  • Build Strong Bones
  • Go Lean with Protein
  • Make a Change (limit foods high in fat, sugar and salt)
  • Celebrate! Eat Smart & Be Active
