   This course focuses on the multiple dimensions of the nursing discipline and the identification, exploration, and analysis of selected contemporary issues and trends in nursing. The course serves as a mechanism for the critical analysis of previous educational experiences, integration of those experiences into present learning goals, and promotes re-socialization into professional nursing roles. The content emphasizes 1) professional roles and responsibilities, 2) the health care environment including historical, legal, ethical, political, and economic aspects, and 3) the importance of nursing science, theory, and research to nursing practice.

Prerequisites: Open to RN-BSN students. Offered summer sessions only. As space permits, this course can be taken by RN's prior to admission to the College of Nursing. Contact kathy-keasler@uiowa.edu for special permission.

Health Assessment

   The first clinical nursing course focuses on health assessment of the adult. Students demonstrate selected assessment skills, compile a health history, conduct a physical exam, and develop nursing diagnoses for selected clients. Offered summer sessions. Note: Theory component is primarily on-line. Lab experience includes peer assessment practice. Labs are scheduled in regional support centers around the state, based on enrollment and student locations. Typically there are three 4-hour lab practice times on Wednesdays mornings as well as a final proficiency testing time near the end of the summer session.

Prerequisites: Admission to the College of Nursing and CPR Certification.
