   This course will cover basic concepts and theories in family economics. A small portion of the course will look at families and economics in other countries. The course is designed to equip students with an overview of the economic situation of families in the US. An overview of the national economy in relation to families will cover the cost of raising children, the Consumer Expenditure Survey, inflation and the CPI. Topics related to household consumption, labor force participation, income distribution and inequality, poverty, disruptions in the family life cycle, human capital, household production, distribution of labor and time use in the household. The course will also include economics of aging, the grants economy, discrepancies in the American Dream and family economic well-being. While major emphasis will be on analysis of the US economy and the trends that affect families. The course will also examine the actions of households in the economy and the theories that have been developed to explain that behavior. The course concludes with a look at current issues affecting public policy.

   An overview of the roles of housing, and real estate in the family financial planning process from a theoretical perspective. Taxation, legal aspects, mortgages, and financial calculations related to home ownership and real estate investments are included.
