4-H Communication Contest Results

Story County 4-H’ers participated in the Story County 4-H Communication Contest held April 29th at Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames.  Their communication entries were evaluated by judges for a ribbon placing.  Entries were also selected for exhibition in the 4-H Building during the 2017 Iowa State Fair.  Thank you to all volunteers that help implement the contest and help it run smoothly.
Youth could participate in five different communication contest. Each one with a different communication method.

Educational Presentations

Educational Presentations give exhibitors a chance to share a topic they are interested in verbally using visual aids.
Blue ribbons: Rebekah Wiech, William Licht, Katrina Wiech, and Lauralee Thach.
Purple ribbons: Ben Rima and Zachary Campbell. 
Advancing to the Iowa State Fair is: Josiah Brown, Erik Soenksen, Grace Long, Dillon Hanlon, and Kylene Harold.

Posters

Communizing through posters, youth choose one theme and capture the audience attention non-verbally. Themes to choose from this year included “4-H is…”, “Join 4-H”, “4-H Grows…”, “Start Your Future Here”, and “Nothing Compares”.
Red ribbons: Micah Ott, Maria Rivera, Austin Babcock, and Coner Kromminga.
Blue ribbons: Matt Sallee, Dillon Hanlon, and Lucas Hartsook.
Purple ribbons: Eden Bruner and Caitlin Maher.
Top Award: Alayna Maher.
Advancing to the Iowa State Fair is: Jameson Kaiser and Lauralee Thach.

Working Exhibits

Working Exhibits allow exhibitors to interact hands-on as they teach the audience about a process, some new information, or a skill.
Blue ribbons: Erik Soenksen, Addison Konz, Justine Rosburg, Maria Rivera, Josie Kelly, Katrina Wiech, Rebekah Wiech, Ben Melody, Travis Goff, Leah Davis, Elizabeth Tschantz, Makenna Carlson, and Lauralee Thach.
Purple Ribbons: Eli Rouse, Jameson Kaiser, Jake Oldenkamp.
Alternate State Fair exhibitors: Matt Sallee, Frank Engstrom, Ashlyn Davis, Sarah Tschantz, Olivia Moody.
Advancing to the Iowa State Fair: Cheryl Blackmer, Logan Conley, Caleb Hartsook and Gage Long.

Extemporaneous Speaking

Extemporaneous Speaking test the youth’s public speaking abilities. Youth prepare and present a 4-6 minute speech after having only 30 minutes to draw 4-H topic, collect information, and form the speech.
Blue ribbon: Katrina Wiech.
Purple ribbon: Rebekah Wiech.
Champion: Vivian Nally.
Alternate State Fair: Jeb Shaw.
Advancing to the Iowa State Fair: Justine Rosburg and Grace Long.

Extemporaneous Writing

Writing skills are also put to the test with a Story County special, Extemporaneous Writing contest. This is unique 4-H communication contest to Story County. Youth are given 20 to 30 minutes to collect thoughts and write an essay on the given 4-H topic.
Blue ribbons: Marian Rivera, Katrina Wiech, Rebekah Wiech.
Purple ribbons: Zachary Campbell, Adam Eichhorn, Vivian Nally, and Grace Long.
Top Award: Lilah Forbes.
Champion: Kylene Harold.
