Description:
E-SET has a kit based on the science and applications of GPS, Global Positioning System, for educational use. This exciting kit can be used by formal and non-formal educators alike. GPS is a valuable tool that is growing at a rapid rate in application.
Objectives:
The GPS learning targets are:
- Information available from a compass
- How to use a compass
- Appropriate applications and limitations of a compass
- How GPS can be used to determine location and elevation
- How to use a GPS unit
- Appropriate applications and limitation of GPS
- How to use GPS and compasses together
- Demonstrate ability to navigate using a GPS and Compass
- Identify applications of GPS in lives of students, hobby and avocation
Educational Activites and Descriptions:
- Trilateration-designed to teach the concepts needed to locate a position using a compass and a map.
- How to use a GPS-designed to introduce the use of GPS receivers to beginners.
- GPS Trail-activity that teaches the procedures of navigating waypoints on a GPS receiver.
- GPS and Maps-latitude and longitude and topo-graphic maps are explored allowing the GPS users to locate and pinpoint locations of landmarks.
- Waypoint Scavenger Hunt-culminating GPS application activity that requires users to navigateand locate specific points using GPS and waypoints.
- GPS Resources-Publications and websites concern-ing GPS.
- Project partners are developing agriculture, forestry, land-use, natural resource, and hobby application activities.
Format:
Each kit comes in a hardshell case with foam padded lining. Inside the case will be ten Garmin eTrex GPS receivers, ten Brunton Compasses, one Brunton Com-pass “How to” Video, one Brunton Overhead projector teaching compass, ten Geometry compasses, one CD-ROM containing educational activities, topographical maps for user locale on a CD-ROM with 3-D aspect, GPS References, uses, applications, purchasing, education, and an instruction manual for GPS and Compass.
Availability
The GPS kit can be checked only by trained users. Those not trained may use the kit in cooperation with trained ISU Extension personnel.
