High tunnel production of fruits and vegetables is the topic of upcoming workshops sponsored by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. The workshop will be held at the ISU Extension – Hardin County office in Iowa Falls on Nov. 17, and the ISU Extension – Linn County office in Marion on Nov. 19.

Impatiens, the top-selling bedding plants in the U.S., have had few insect and disease problems. Unfortunately, the disease situation appears to be about to change as impatiens downy mildew has appeared in much of the eastern U.S. in the last two years. This destructive disease may impact many home gardeners over the next few years.

The drought of 2012 has taken a toll on many lawns across Iowa. David Minner, ISU Extension and Outreach turfgrass specialist, estimates that most neighborhoods have approximately 25 to 50 percent of the lawns showing some degree of turf loss from the drought and of the injured lawns approximately 25 to 50 percent of the turf in each lawn has been killed.

More Iowa farmers are cutting corn for silage this summer due to the extreme heat, dryness and crop conditions. Because of the increased silage production, the possibilities for silo gas and related health issues have increased, according to Chuck Schwab, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach farm safety and health specialist.
