The Federal Government created the National Do Not Call Registry to make it easier and more efficient for you to reduce the number of unwanted calls.  You can register online or call toll free 1-888-382-1222.  Your registration is free and will be effective for five years.

Most telemarketers should not call your number once it has been on the registry for 31 days starting January 1, 2005.  If you do continue to receive unwanted calls, you can file a complaint online by calling 1-888-CALL-FCC.  To further reduce calls, just say "Put me on your Do Not Call list."  They are required to comply with your request.

You can check into the FTC Q&A page if you have more questions.

Another source you can use to stop those unwanted calls is to call 1-888-5-opt-out.  This service is operated by the three major credit bureaus.  It will reduce the number of pre-screened credit card offers, insurance, and other offers you may receive.

Remember to respond to annual privacy notices.  Financial institutions, insurance companies and other financial organizations are required to notify you each year as to how they handle your personal information.  Reply in writing that you do not want them to share personal data.
