Nearly 100 new inductees joined the 2009 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Building at the Iowa State Fair Sunday, August 23, and among this year's inductees were Sioux County’s, Shane and Connie Kirschten of Alton.
This is what was submitted in their nomination by 4-H County Youth Coordinator, Cindy Cleveringa, and shared at the ceremony. “Shane and Connie Kirschten can testify that 4-H is a family experience. Connie served as the leader of the Valley Volunteers 4-H club for nine years and on the 4-H Awards Committee for the past three years. She has dedicated many hours of time, talent and efforts to 4-H in Sioux County. Members of her club were actively involved in community service and leadership experiences. Shane has served on the Extension Council for the past six years and as Sheep Superintendent and Beef Superintendent, as well as Herdsmanship judge throughout the week of the fair. Their desire to promote 4-H and the life skills it teaches is evident in their support of the program and youth of Sioux County. Both Connie and Shane willing give of their time and talent to their community, church and neighbors. They exemplify the outcomes we desire to see in our 4-H’ers as they graduate from 4-H and enter the work world.”
Inductees into the Hall of Fame received recognition at the Iowa State Fair for their outstanding service and dedication to 4-H. They were presented a plaque by the Iowa 4-H Foundation.
Counties select inductees for their exceptional work in contributing to the lives of 4-H members and the overall 4-H program. Many inductees served as club leaders, youth mentors, fair superintendents, or fair board members. Others served as Extension council members, county youth council members, fair judges or Iowa State University (ISU) Extension staff members. The Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame inductees have demonstrated dedication, encouragement and commitment to Iowa's 4-H'ers through the years.
