Northwest Iowa - Local foods are making an economic impact in Iowa. In fact, sales of food produced in northwest Iowa added $312,441 to the local economy in 2012 as reported by eighteen farmers in the northwest region.

The IMPACT Youth Leadership program teaches youth the skills to understand their own leadership styles, how teams work and an understanding of how the group can perform more effectively.  A strong component of the IMPACT program is that not only does the program identify leadership skills, but it also teaches those skills to the participants and then gives them an opportunity to put those skills into practice in their community.  ATLAS of Siouxland was a recipient of their generosity.

Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach is continuing to expand its programs by offering their 4-H based STEM camps to non-4-H members. This summer in Sioux County, 77% of the attendance at the STEM camps were students new to the 4-H programs. Over 80 youth were enrolled in various camps throughout the summer.

Sioux County 4-H is happy to recognize Cheryl Palsma as one of the caring adults who have modeled volunteerism, community service, integrity, and leadership to Iowa’s youth.  Their legacy is the young people they have mentored who will in turn support the continuation of a 4-H program that builds Iowa’s leaders.

Of all the possible clubs and organizations parents and kids can choose to belong to, a 4-H club should be number one on the list. What does the public know about 4-H? What do you know about 4-H? Experts at ISU Extension and Outreach know all activities are and always have been STEM focused, meaning the members are engaged in science, technology, engineering and mathematic principles. Sioux County youth who belong to a 4-H club are immersed in STEM activities. When they write their report on “What did you do this summer?” they could write a book. The attached article tells the story of what Sioux County youth did this summer.

Oven canning is NOT a safe shortcut. Katie Knobbe, nutrition and health specialist and a master food safety advisor for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach says, “Many individuals have shared they have tried, or have heard about, oven canning. Just because a jar is sealed doesn’t mean the food inside is safe to eat.  Check out the great publications or plan to attend the Salsa Making workshop on August 24 in Orange City.

The 4-H motto, "to make the best better," has always been about applying science to our everyday lives.  The Mad Scientists 4-H Club has taken that motto to heart and is focusing on STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) projects.  Robotics is fun and exciting part of the STEM area.
