Iowa has changed vendors and names for the High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) test. Iowa is now offering the chance to earn your HSED by studying for and taking the HiSET test. Northwest Iowa Community College (NCC) offers free classes to prepare you for the HiSET test.

Northwest Iowa - Local foods are making an economic impact in Iowa. In fact, sales of food produced in northwest Iowa added $312,441 to the local economy in 2012 as reported by eighteen farmers in the northwest region.

Check this list of private continuing instruction course (CIC) programs that will be held in and around Northwest Iowa this winter. You do need to preregister for CIC sessions in our county.  If you plan to attend a session in another county, check with that county extension office about preregistration and the arrival time. . Note that your Private Pesticide Applicator Certification number and the year your certification expires are on the mailing label.

The IMPACT Youth Leadership program teaches youth the skills to understand their own leadership styles, how teams work and an understanding of how the group can perform more effectively.  A strong component of the IMPACT program is that not only does the program identify leadership skills, but it also teaches those skills to the participants and then gives them an opportunity to put those skills into practice in their community.

Dordt College and Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach 4H and Youth Programs are answering the call by presenting “STEM Fest” on Saturday, Feb. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  STEM faculty and students from Dordt College and ISU Extension and Outreach staff offer fun-filled, mind-blowing, STEM-ulating activities to help youth experience the exciting applications of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Of all the possible clubs and organizations parents and kids can choose to belong to, a 4-H club should be number one on the list. What does the public know about 4-H? What do you know about 4-H? Experts at ISU Extension and Outreach know all activities are and always have been STEM focused, meaning the members are engaged in science, technology, engineering and mathematic principles. Sioux County youth who belong to a 4-H club are immersed in STEM activities. When they write their report on “What did you do this summer?” they could write a book. The attached article tells the story of what Sioux County youth did this summer.

Oven canning is NOT a safe shortcut. Katie Knobbe, nutrition and health specialist and a master food safety advisor for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach says, “Many individuals have shared they have tried, or have heard about, oven canning. Just because a jar is sealed doesn’t mean the food inside is safe to eat.  Check out the great publications or plan to attend the Salsa Making workshop on August 24 in Orange City.
