FarmAnswers.org is the USDA-NIFA beginning farmer and rancher clearinghouse, providing resources to help young producers get started farming, as well as tools to help more seasoned producers succeed. Farmers and ranchers can find online courses, videos, presentations, apps, and other materials to answer farming and ranching questions.

Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach hosted a SafeFood for 4-Hers event April 23 at the Sioux County Extension and Outreach Office. Sioux County 4-H members and club leaders attended the event which was designed to help 4-H members, leaders, and parents better understand how to handle food when working in food stands, at fundraisers, and even when cooking or baking for 4-H projects.

Strawberries are well suited for any home garden. They are hardy, easy to grow and produce a good crop with moderate effort. Early spring is one of the best times to plant strawberries in Iowa and knowing when to plant and how to grow and maintain the strawberries is key to producing a successful crop. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach horticulturists give tips and suggestions on planting, growing and maintaining strawberries in Iowa.

Each year Iowa State University recognizes the excellence of faculty and staff accomplishments through university awards. Cheryl Heronemus, regional extension education director for counties in northwest Iowa, was honored with the 2015 R.K. Bliss Award. The award, named for the director of extension from 1912 to 1946, recognizes outstanding achievement of an Iowa State University Extension and Outreach staff member for developing an overall or continuing extension education program.

Oven canning is NOT a safe shortcut. Katie Knobbe, nutrition and health specialist and a master food safety advisor for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach says, “Many individuals have shared they have tried, or have heard about, oven canning. Just because a jar is sealed doesn’t mean the food inside is safe to eat.  Check out the great publications or plan to attend the Salsa Making workshop on August 24 in Orange City.
