Iowa State University Extension is moving its exhibit at the Iowa State Fair to the air-conditioned 4-H Exhibits Building at the south end of the fairgrounds. We have a lot of exciting information to share with fairgoers this year including:

Germ City -- The fair is a great opportunity to inform people about the importance of washing their hands. Sam Beattie, ISU Extension’s food safety specialist is preparing a variety of handouts, materials and activities for the fair to coincide with the exhibit. In the meantime, you can see what Idaho and Washington Extension staff have developed for this award-winning exhibit developed at Washington State. One fair in Washington reported fair goers used twice as much hand soap at the fair. Will we see those results in Iowa? For more information, see

http://www.agls.uidaho.edu/germcity/poster.htm and
http://www.high-impact-exhibits.com/germcity.shtml

Eat to Compete -- Fair goers can get up-to-date information on the role of nutrition in physical performance by visiting four separate activity workstations where they will find answers to:

  • Want energy?  Eat Carbs!  -- play the carbometer
  •  Do I need a protein supplement?     --  compare protein supplements and common food
  •  What to drink and when  -- learn how to classify sport drinks
  •  Don't let dehydration slow you down -- play the H20 race

The information can be used by the recreational athlete, competitive athlete, coaches, trainers or anyone interested in improving their overall health through nutrition and exercise. Those completing all four activities will receive an Eat to Compete water bottle as a prize. For more information see: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/nutrition/sport/

Avian Flu -- Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is a viral disease that infects almost all species of birds. Infected birds can pass the virus to some animals and humans. Since December 2003, the H5N1 avian influenza virus has spread through Asia, Europe and six African countries. The H5N1 virus is not present in the United States and there is no human influenza pandemic in the world at this time. The exhibit will focus on information for consumers and for producers. Bird flu fans will be available for fairgoers wanting to cool down at the fair.  For more information see: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/birdflu/

Live radio -- Midday and Talk of Iowa programs plus market news reports will be produced and broadcast live from the Extension booth weekdays during the fair. http://www.woi.org/

Emerald ash borer--This display shows howthe emerald ash borer (EAB) is a new, significant threat to Iowa’s urban and rural forests. First identified in 2002 in southeastern Michigan, this exotic beetle has destroyed millions of ash trees in southeast Michigan and adjacent parts of Ohio and Ontario, Canada. EAB also has been found in northeast Illinois and several Indiana counties. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources – Forestry Bureau estimates that approximately 20-25% of public trees in Iowa cities are green ash. Details on the identification and symptoms of EAB are available on Iowa State University Extension’s Pest Management and the Environment program’s Web site at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/pme.

Several fun activities are planned with 4-H. Operation Military Kids will have a computer lab set up so postcards can be sent to Iowa military folks who can’t come to the fair. Also, the 4-H Tech team will work with Operation Military Kids to shoot a video of the fair to be made available to military personnel stationed around the globe. Young fair goers can get their very own ISU Extension/4-H pencil just in time for going back to school. For more information, see: http://www.operationmilitarykids.org/public/omk.aspx and http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4H/techteam/index.html

Friends and family can’t make it? They can tune in to the ISU Extension web site www.extension.iastate.edu and watch the web cams from the building.
