Effective January 1, 2009, there will be a moratorium until July 1, 2009 on Train the Trainers Certification. If your agency already requested a TOT certification, your request will be honored.

Within the state of Iowa, Iowa State University Extension staff are the authorized facilitator trainers. Non Iowa agencies are able to become certified SFP 10-14 trainers their own facilitators, a team of at least two potential trainers need to complete the following:

  • Attend a training in the program led by certified trainers.
  • Each new trainer of facilitators then implements and teaches at least two groups of families in sessions 1-7 of the curriculum, at least one parent group and one youth group, plus family sessions.
  • Each new trainer attends a training which includes both the regular facilitator training plus eight hours of train-of-trainer (TOT) instruction. In other words, new trainers observe a "regular" 16-hour training, observing training techniques. Before and after this training, new trainers are given instruction in facilitating TOT sessions. They also assist in the training. In the this step, individuals being trained as trainers have the two options for receiving TOT training. See Options 1 and 2 below
  • Those who complete all of these steps are certified Strengthening Families Program 10-14 Facilitator Trainers and are able to conduct train-the-trainer sessions WITHIN their own organization and community. During each stage new trainers may receive phone consultation from the program coordinator, Cathy Hockaday, hockaday@iastate.edu, 515-294-7601.

Option 1
Host a three-day training for new facilitators. In addition to observing the regular program training, the TOT schedule includes eight hours of specialized TOT training and mentoring.  TOT individuals receive this specialized training and mentoring before and after each day’s program instruction.
Option 2
TOT individuals attend a training in location sponsored by another group. They then assist in the teaching of that group’s regular training and receive specialized TOT training and mentoring during these times.
