Visit Local Producers on Flavors of Northwest Iowa Culinary Tour Aug. 21
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Get on board for the “Farm to Fork” culinary tour hosted by Flavors of Northwest Iowa, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. The bus tour connects people who want to know more about local foods with local producers.
“Research shows people want to know where their food is grown. Many search for locally grown food and we offer several opportunities to connect the people of Iowa to locally grown food,” states Laurie Taylor, ISU Extension and Outreach regional foods and master gardener coordinator. “This tour will not disappoint.”
The bus leaves at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21 from the ISU Extension and Outreach Woodbury parking lot, 4301 Sergeant Road, #213, across the street from the Southern Hills mall. The itinerary for the tour includes four stops.
Tentinger Family Dairy Farm, Remsen
Meet the Tentinger family whose farm has been in the Tentinger family since 1882 and enjoy all things dairy. Jim and Sharon took over the dairy herd from Jim’s dad in the 1980s and named it Ten-Ayr Dairy. Meet “the girls” who are housed in a free-stall barn on a tour of the farm. Samples of flavored milk, yogurt, cheese and ice cream will be provided.
Bluebird Springs Orchard, Akron
John and Mary Lucken have an apple orchard and aronia berry plantation on their farm. They work with Tony Heisterkamp from Eden Valley Orchard and Aronia Plantation to develop new recipes, product uses, marketing and new outlets for their products. Tour the orchard, experience how aronia berries are grown and harvested, and taste apple and aronia berry juices and cider, salsa, jellies and sauces.
C. Brown, Merrill
Learn how Clint, Steve and Audrey Brown grow and produce vegetables and beef. Clint has several high tunnel greenhouses where he grows every size and color of heirloom tomatoes imaginable, a variety of hot and sweet peppers, and assorted other vegetables. Audrey Brown is in charge of jelly and jam making in the farm. She uses many of Clint’s vegetables in her recipes. Steve raises grass fed beef on the family farm. The Brown family sells their vegetables, jelly, jam and grass-fed beef at the Sioux City farmers' market. Tour the farm and commercial kitchen, and enjoy samples of a variety of tomatoes, jellies and jams.
Tucker Hill Vineyard and Winery, Hinton
Barry and Brenda Dittmer began their Tucker Hill venture in 2002 when they received 400 grape vines. Their vines came to fruit in 2008 and in May 2009 Tucker Hill Vineyard and Winery was born. Tour the vineyard perched on rolling hills, learn about the winemaking process, sample wines and enjoy a dinner catered by Carol’s Kitchen.

Seating is guaranteed with payment of $65 per person sent to the Woodbury County Extension office. Register for the tour by contacting the Woodbury County Extension Office at 712-276-2157 or by completing and mailing the registration form on the Flavors of Northwest Iowa website. Deadline for registration is Aug. 15.
