2013 ISU Scott County Extension & Outreach Master Gardener Spring Educational Series
2013 ISU Scott County Extension & Outreach Master Gardener Spring Educational Series
Iowa State University Scott County Extension & Outreach Master Gardeners announce their spring educational series designed for gardeners of all experience levels.
March 5 – Starting Seeds and Plant Propagation – Looking to expand the number or type of plants you grow, try out an heirloom variety, or desiring an early start to your gardening season? Join Lifetime Scott County Master Gardener Tom Dywiak who will demonstrate methods of successfully starting seed and propagating plants.
March 12 – Mixed Gardens: An Approach for All Seasons – Ray Wolf, Scott County Master Gardener will show us how to find room for all of those intriguing new plants that grab our attention. Learn about mixed gardens, their role in the landscape, preparation and design considerations, and see examples applicable to our area. So whether it’s a tree, shrub, flower, grass, bulb, annual or perennial that you fancy, learn how to fit it all in with stunning results.
March 26 – A Tour of English Gardens – Sit back and enjoy a journey “across the pond” to London and Kew, Royal Botanic Gardens. After an enchanting visit we will hopscotch across southeast England and end our visit at the oldest botanic garden in Great Britain – University of Oxford Botanic Garden. Kay Sigardson-Poor, Scott County Master Gardener, will be our tour guide.
April 2 – Herbs: What You May or May Not Know – Scott County Master Gardeners Colleen Adrian and Rhonda Cooper will cover the A-Z of herbs. You will learn about herb history, starting herbs from seed, growing and harvesting herbs, and their use and preservation. After attending this class you will be able to grow and utilize your own herb garden.
April 9 – Plants for Problem Areas – Dan Mays, Scott County Master Gardener, will provide suggestions for plants to grow in those challenging spots we all have in our yards. Slopes, shade, and hot spots near streets and driveways are no match for the ideas Dan will provide to turn problem areas into attractive alternatives.
Classes are held in the Cyclone Room at the Scott County Extension Office at 875 Tanglefoot Lane in Bettendorf from 7:00 – 9:00 pm . A nominal $5 fee is charged and refreshments will be available. Please register for classes by calling the Extension Office at 563-359-7577 weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Classes are 1-2 hours in length.
