The 4-H program is a great opportunity for youth to develop various skills including leaedership, communication, and servce.  Although the majority of youth participate within a club format, this does not work for all youth.  Some choose to participate as independent members.  Independent members have a mentor that will guide them through their 4-H experience and help them meet goals.  Independent membership allows more flexibility, but with that comes more responsibility.  There are requirements to be an Independent 4-H'er.
