The Journey of Parenting Education
This module provides an overview of the objectives, content, and format
of the module series. You will learn about parenting practices in the
U.S. over the past century, current trends, and develop a vision for the
future. You will self-assess your knowledge and skills, begin to develop
a personal philosophy of parenting education, identify your personal preferences,
and learn about competencies and traits helpful to facilitating parent
learning.
Cultural
Perspectives on Parenting
Here, you will further understand your own culture and how it influences
your values, attitudes, expectations, and parenting practices. You will
learn about values held by other cultures and the influence of these values
on parenting practices. Cultural stereotypes will be explored, as well
as applying principles of family-centered practices when building relationships
with families of cultures different than your own.
Parenting with Special Challenges
There are a number of unique challenges that families
face. Some examples include: living in poverty, teenage parenting, single
parenthood, raising grandchildren, substance abuse, violence, incarceration,
and raising a
child with a disability. You will learn about some of these unique challenges,
values families hold, how parenting is similar or different for families
facing these challenges, and how to effectively reach and involve families
in learning. In this module, you will learn how to help families identify
their strengths and personal social support networks, connect with community
resources, and advocate for themselves.
Exploring Child-rearing
Strategies and Assessing Parenting Education Resources
Here, you will identify your personal preferences and approaches to parenting
education. You will identify underlying theories and strategies promoted
in popular parenting curricula, and develop knowledge and skills to assess
curricula to best meet the needs of families you work with and your own
style.
Parent
Learning in Small Groups
In this module, you will learn about group dynamics and its value as a
format for parent learning. You will have an opportunity to practice group
facilitation techniques and learn from your peers about strategies that
work.
Understanding Child and Parent Development
A sound understanding of how children grow and develop is critical for
effective parenting. In this module, you will learn about the ages and
stages of development infancy through adolescence. Strategies for
sharing developmental information with parents will be explored. In addition,
you will learn about the stages of parenthood, and opportunities and challenges
facing parents during each stage.
Feeding Children and Physical
Activities for Families
You will learn about the changing nutrition needs of children as they
grow and develop, and the important
role parents and other adults play in establishing healthy feeding relationships
with children. Fun, developmentally appropriate activities to promote
physical activity in families will be shared.
Guiding,
Nurturing, and Motivating Children
Learn what the latest research tells us about guiding, nurturing, and
motivating children. Explore how temperament influences the parent-child
relationship. Learn how to use age-specific strategies like learning through
play and other parent and child interaction activities.
Measuring
Program Outcomes
In this module, you will develop an understanding of terms and components
of outcomes evaluation. You will learn how to use a framework to develop
program outcomes that make a real difference for families.
Financial
Stability and Family Well-being
Past experiences and values influence family spending, which is linked
to family well-being. Learn how you can assist families in identifying
the difference between needs and wants, how values influence spending,
and how to work towards financial goals and use a spending plan.
Building Support for
Yourself and Professional Development
Working with families is rewarding, but can be difficult sometimes. Come
learn about strategies and resources to re-energize yourself and further
your own development as a family professional or volunteer. Explore professional
ethics and applications for your work with families, as well as looking
at the field of parenting education as a profession. Learn about Web sites,
newsletters, workshops, conferences, and publications to support your
continual development.
