FACE TO FACE SERIES IN IOWA

Continuing Education Units
Partnering with Parents (PWP) is also offered as non-credit through awarding of Continuing Education Units. Iowa State University, Continuing Education and Communication Services is an Iowa Board of Social Work Examiners approved provider #00272. Both the face to face and online full series are approved for 62.4 hours of Continuing Social Work Education and 6.0 ISU CEUs. PWP is approved for 5.5 Continuing Education Credits (55 contact hours) for the Certified Family Life Educator program through the National Council on Family Relations. In addition, individuals can earn 75 PDUs through the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS). The two-day workshop is approved for 14.6 social worker hours, and 1.2 ISU CEUs.

The approval of teacher renewal credits vary by site. Check with the local site facilitator at the site you are interested in attending to find out if teacher renewal credits are available at that site. Teacher license renewal credit from Heartland AEA is available for the PWP Online series and the summer 2 day workshop in Ames, IA for $25 payable to Heartland AEA 11.

Individuals who want to earn continuing education units will be provided forms specific to the continuing education units they are interested in earning. However, for AAFCS PDUs and NCFR CFLE CEUs, learners document their participation on their renewal forms; there is no specific form ISU provides learners. For social workers hours and ISU CEUs, learners complete and send in the forms with their check to the contact listed on the form. For teacher renewal credits, learners will turn in their completed forms, along with a check for the teacher renewal credit fee to the local site facilitator. The facilitator will send the forms and checks into appropriate AEA contact. Learners will receive documentation of the continuing education units they earned within two months after the forms are sent in.

ISU Extension Parenting Education Certificate of Completion
Individuals who complete the entire series within 12 months are eligible to receive a Parenting Education Certificate of Completion offered by Iowa State University Extension. Ideally, learners will participate in the module series at one site. However, Partnering with Parents has built in flexibility for learners to participate in modules at different sites if some of the dates that modules are scheduled at the main site they are registered do not work for them. Learners need to communicate to their site facilitator if they want to participate in a module at another site so appropriate arrangements can be made.

Certification requirements for individuals who are already certified as Family Development Workers consist of completion of modules and accompanying activities below within an 12-month period.

The Journey of Parenting Education
This module provides an overview of the objectives, content, and format of the module series. You will learn about parenting practices in the U.S. over the past century, current trends, and develop a vision for the future. You will self-assess your knowledge and skills, begin to develop a personal philosophy of parenting education, identify your personal preferences, and learn about competencies and traits helpful to facilitating parent learning.

Exploring Child-rearing Strategies and Assessing Parenting Education Resources
Here, you will identify your personal preferences and approaches to parenting education. You will identify underlying theories and strategies promoted in popular parenting curricula, and develop knowledge and skills to assess curricula to best meet the needs of families you work with and your own style.

Understanding Child and Parent Development
A sound understanding of how children grow and develop is critical for effective parenting. In this module, you will learn about the ages and stages of development - infancy through adolescence. Strategies for sharing developmental information with parents will be explored. In addition, you will learn about the stages of parenthood, and opportunities and challenges facing parents during each stage.

Feeding Children and Physical Activities for Families
You will learn about the changing nutrition needs of children as they grow and develop, and the important role parents and other adults play in establishing healthy feeding relationships with children. Fun, developmentally appropriate activities to promote physical activity in families will be shared.

Guiding, Nurturing, and Motivating Children
Learn what the latest research tells us about guiding, nurturing, and motivating children. Explore how temperament influences the parent-child relationship. Learn how to use age-specific strategies like learning through play and other parent and child interaction activities.

Measuring Program Outcomes
In this module, you will develop an understanding of terms and components of outcomes evaluation. You will learn how to use a framework to develop program outcomes that make a real difference for families.

Financial Stability and Family Well-being
Past experiences and values influence family spending, which is linked to family well-being. Learn how you can assist families in identifying the difference between needs and wants, how values influence spending, and how to work towards financial goals and use a spending plan.
