10. When working on a public
policy issue it is essential that everyone share similar points
of view.
The
answer should be false.
The involvement of individuals with varying
views is critical to achieving successful policy. Many policy
issues arise from conflict between groups of individuals. By
creating an environment that allows for conflicting beliefs allows
for a productive resolution process.
Other elements that are necessary for public
policy education are:
A Structured
Process that conveys an understanding of what is going on and
underscores that different viewpoints are being heard and understood.
Ground Rules
that can serve as a basis for operating and which express mutual
respect of all viewpoints shared.
A Broad Perspective
to encourage participants to look beyond the immediate issue
and vision the issue at a higher/larger level.
Shared Information
that is available to all participants.
Identified
Goals, those that are identified as being contrasting and those
that share a common basis.
Seek Mutually
Acceptable Solutions by using an alternative/consequence process
and group brainstorming.
Realization
that the Process is Continual, as not all consequences can be
anticipated.
Evaluation
to determine what worked during the process and the effect of
the resolution.
