DES MOINES – A new detection of an invasive pest has been positively identified after a larva sample was collected from a city-owned tree in Grinnell on June 16, 2015. This brings the total of confirmed infested counties to 25 since emerald ash borer was first discovered in Iowa in 2010. This small, metallic-green beetle native to Asia kills ash tree species.

June program offers landscaping designs and trough gardening information

Montezuma, Iowa – Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Poweshiek County office is hosting the sixth annual “Growing Season”webinar series at Grinnell, Iowa, during {June, July and August}. Gardeners will learn about creative ideas for theme gardens, planting trough gardens, water features and conservation, attracting butterflies and bees, and growing herbs.

The Poweshiek County Master Gardeners will be hosting a Master Garden Tour in Montezuma on Tuesday, June 9th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This fundraiser is a great opportunity for you to begin your summer by strolling through the beautiful gardens in Montezuma before enjoying the kick-off of Montezuma’s “Nights on the Square” from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The Iowa Master Gardener program and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach are once again offering a series of summer garden webinars for the general public.

Trees are one of the most valuable components of home landscapes. Because weather patterns over the past couple of years have taken a toll on landscape trees, and because the Emerald Ash Borer is advancing across the state, the theme for the 2014 summer webinars is Totally Trees.

  • Let us "feed" your appetite for gardening information with a wide menu of gardening entrees.

  • Helping support the state’s evolving grape and wine industry, because the potential economic opportunities in wineries, value-added agriculture and tourism are limitless.

  • Master Gardeners are individuals who have an interest in horticulture, have taken the Master Gardener training offered by Iowa State University Extension, and share their time and expertise with other gardeners.

  • Horticulture & Home Pest News is filled with articles on current horticulture, plant care, pest management, and common household pests written by Iowa State University Extension specialists.
