Poweshiek Leadership Program Graduation
Poweshiek Leadership Program graduated its 2012-2013 participants May 9th at the English Valley Bed and Breakfast in Montezuma. This year’s class consisted of twenty people that live or work in Poweshiek County. Each participant is also sponsored by a local business or organization.
Poweshiek Leadership Program (PLP) is designed for area employers to grow employees into community leaders. This program focuses on uniting emerging leaders , increasing participants knowledge of county issues, developing a collective vision for the county, and enhancing each person’s ability to lead.
PLP offers various hand-on learning experiences, group activities, team building, discussions, and presentations addressing topics and issues that our county is faced with. The sessions run from September to May and focus on the following topics: Finding The Leader Within; What Are Our Community Resources; Local, County, and State Government; Health/Wellness; and Economic Development as it relates to business and industry and agriculture.
In addition to the personal, professional, and civic knowledge our participants leave with, PLP also likes to give back to the communities we represent. Each year $250 is donated to a civic organization in the Grinnell, Brooklyn, and Montezuma areas. This year the participants choose the Brooklyn Community Food Pantry (Brooklyn), Big Hearts for Tiny Hands (Grinnell), and Montezuma Community Foundation (Montezuma) to donate to in Poweshiek County. In addition to that donation, PLP provides two $250 scholarships to seniors in Grinnell, BGM, Montezuma, and HLV School Districts.
PLP is coordinated with Imagine Grinnell, ISU/Poweshiek County Extension, Iowa Valley Continuing Education, and Poweshiek Iowa Development.
Nearly 360 have graduated from the program since it’s inception in 1995. If you’d like to learn more about how to participate or become a sponsor, please contact Cathy at (641) 623-5188 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
