Junior Master Gardener

Poweshiek County Extension 4-H  and Imagine Grinnell are teaming up to start a Junior Master Gardeners Club in Grinnell this spring. The club is open to all youth in grades 3 through 8 whether or not they are currently 4-H members. There will be an informational and registration meeting from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM on Thursday, March 22nd in the Community Room at the Drake Community Library. Parents can learn more about the Junior Master Gardeners program and register their children to participate. Registration is $25 for current 4-H members and $35 for non 4-H members. Youth that register for the club and join 4-H will have the extra $10 waived from their registration fee.

The club will meet at the Grinnell Middle School on Thursday afternoons form 3:30 PM to 5 PM starting on April 12th and running for 14 weeks till July 12th. Participants in the club will learn about food, gardening, and nature through hands-on classroom activities, planning and planting their own plot at the Grinnell Community Garden in Miller Park, participating in field trips to local farms and parks, and hearing from local experts and Extension staff. Among the planned activities are starting vegetable and herb seeds indoors, creating a garden weather station, starting a worm composting bin, making jam from local berries, and creating a guidebook to the trees of Miller Park. The Junior Master Gardeners program will conclude in July, when the youth will have the opportunity to exhibit their produce, projects and displays at the Poweshiek County Fair. Club members who complete all the necessary individual, group, and service project activities will become certified Junior Master Gardeners.
