Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) is a 4-H leadership program for high school youth, grades 10th – 12th, from across the country. Every summer nearly 1,600 young people stay at the National 4-H Conference Center, near Washington, D.C., to participate in this week-long program.

So far this harvest, a lot of corn and soybeans have gone into storage at temperatures in the 70s and some 80s. With grain this warm, moisture migration and spoilage can occur quickly, even with fairly dry grain.

For the first time in 15 years there are major changes in school lunches that will result in healthier meals for kids. What’s changing? The new school meals will contain more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables; low-fat or non-fat milk; and less sodium and fat. The meals will also be “right sized”– portion sizes will be based on a student’s age.

Poweshiek County has JUST been approved for Emergency Grazing effective TODAY July 25th, 2012 due to extreme drought conditions. Emergency Haying is effective August 2, 2012. The entire state of Iowa has now been released for Emergency Haying/Grazing of CRP Effective August 2.

Iowa State University Extension beef program specialist Denise Schwab offers a few strategies that may help.

AMES, Iowa ― As the drought continues, cattle producers are asking how to stretch their pastures. Two major techniques may be pursued, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach beef program specialist Denise Schwab. One is to reduce the grazing pressure from the animal side, and the other is to supplement the amount of feed available.
