 Iowa farmers who perform custom work, hire work done, or some of both have the 2013 Iowa Farm Custom Rate Survey schedule as a guide in determining custom rates.

This information is based on a survey of 249 Iowa farmers, custom operators, and farm managers.  For each operation, the average rate from the survey and the range are shown.

During February, family life specialists Donna Donald and Lori Hayungs offer tips for parents and teachers in the Science of Parenting blog from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

AMES, Iowa — Parents have choices about ways to guide and discipline their children. In March, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is sponsoring an interactive webinar for parents and grandparents with tips on using love and limits to teach children to be respectful and responsible.

Dry conditions during much of 2012 and overgrazing late into the fall have damaged many Iowa
pastures. Pastures with bare areas and thin sod cover will be less productive and more susceptible
to weed encroachment. Most producers want to maintain their existing pastures, but might like
to improve them by doing some form of partial reseeding. Frostseeding is one method that
should be considered.

Join other 7thand 8thgraders from Jasper, Marion, Mahaska, Poweshiek, Polk, Dallas, Madison and Warren Counties for a fun filled trip to Kansas City MO.  The dates for the trip are Tuesday, June 11 & Wednesday, June 12, 2013.  A highlight of the trip is a visit to the Worlds of Fun.  You will also get to see the Kansas City Royals play the Detroit Tigers and all participants will get to visit the Arabia Steamboat Museum, Bass Pro Shop and the Mood Marble Company. Join us, make new friends and have a fun mini-vacation this summer.

Brooklyn, Iowa;  On Sunday, November 4th, Poweshiek County 4-H recognized local 4-Hers for their past year of accomplishments and kicked off the next year .  The evening’s theme was “One Team, One Mission”. Staff from the Iowa 4H center led the attendees in get acquainted and team building activities.  Following a potluck meal the Maggie Zehr led the National Anthem.

School lunch can be a good source of nutrition for children. But the menu may not match their food preferences every day.  A popular alternative for parents is to pack a lunch, but the traditional “brown bag” of years past is not the safest way to send a child's lunch to school.  A new publication from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach aims to guide parents on creating a healthy, balanced meal, while keeping the food safe until lunch time.
