Body Mass Index School Study - ISU Extension in Polk county with funding from the Polk County Board of Supervisors and the Mid-Iowa Health Foundation has conducted a two-part study of childhood overweight in the county during 2008. First and fifth graders in four school districts ( Des Moines, West Des Moines, Saydel and Southeast Polk) have been measured by school nurses to create a base line measurement allowing the community to monitor childhood overweight. In addition to the measurement project, focus groups of parents were conducted determine how the schools and community could best work with parents on this issue.
