Reducing Moisture Loss: Mowing

Mowing

It is important to know that the appropriate range of mowing heights varies with the type of turfgrass. Not all experts agree on the optimum mowing practices for water-conserving landscapes.

However, a common recommendation is to raise the mowing height to the upper end of the range. The longer turfgrass is able to develop a more extensive root system, which is beneficial during dry periods.

Mowing Heights

A mowing height of less than two inches creates a shallow root system that needs moisture more often.

A mowing height of 2 to 3 inches has two advantages.

  1. Longer blades wil shade each other and the soil, reducing moisture loss.
  2. The root system grows longer and thicker.
