Category 5 - Aquatic Pest Control

Definitions – For persons applying herbicides to control weeds and other pests in standing or running water. Excludes applicators engaged in public health control programs. A special endorsement is provided within category 5 for persons applying sewer line tree root control chemicals, including Metam-sodium.

Category 6 - Right-of-Way

Definitions – For persons applying pesticides to rights-of-way, roadsides, electric powerline or pipeline corridors, railroads, etc.

Category 7A - General & Household Pest Management

Definitions – For persons applying pesticides in human dwellings, institutions, food dispensing and handling establishments, including food manufacturers and processors.

Category 7B - Termite Control

Definitions – For persons applying pesticides for the control of termites and other wood destroying insects.

Category 7C - Fumigation

Definitions – For persons applying fumigants in, on, or around areas where grain is stored: where food is processed, manufactured or produced; and in storage structures, greenhouses, and dwellings.

Category 7D - Community Insect Management

Definitions – For persons applying pesticides for the control of flies and mosquitoes in community health programs.

Category 7E - Wood Preservatives

Category 8 - Public Health Pest Control

Definitions –For persons applying pesticides in public health programs for the management and control of insects, disease, rodents, and birds having medical and public health importance.

Category 10 - Demonstration and Research

Definitions – For persons demonstrating safe and effective use of pesticides to the public; persons associated with research on pesticides, including determining the effectiveness of pesticides, residue problems, effect on non-target organisms, etc. To become certified in this category, individuals must be certified in an additional category. This category includes extension staff, industry representatives, researchers, vocational agriculture teachers, and others.

Category 11 - Aerial Application

Definitions – For persons applying pesticides from aircraft. Certification in the aerial applicator category qualifies an individual to apply fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides to all agricultural crops. If application to other sides than agricultural crops is anticipated, you must be additionally certified in the appropriate category in addition to Category 11.

Category H - Certified Handlers

Definitions – For persons who handle opened pesticide containers, repackage bulk pesticides, or dispose of pesticide-related waste while under supervision of a certified commercial applicator, noncommercial applicator, public applicator, or pesticide dealer.

Training manual - Certified Handlers are tested over chapters 1-5, 8, and 10 of the Iowa Core Manual. Handlers are not tested over specific category manuals.
