Iowa NACAA Meeting Minutes
Fall 2002

October 29, 2002 3:00 to 5:00 PM

Meeting was called to order by President Linda Engelken-Fischer at 3:15 PM. The agenda was approved by consent.

The motion to approve the April 9, 2002 minutes as written was made by John Creswell and seconded by Steve Johnson. Motion passed.

The treasurer’s report from ISUCEP treasurer Lynn Benson was presented by Rich Wrage. The report shows a beginning balance of $5,883.54 with income from FY 2002 at 131.88 for an ending balance of $6,015.42. Of this amount, $3,730 was being held specifically for the BBQ at the AM/PIC in Green Bay in July, 2003. Motion by Dan Burkhart seconded by Neil Wubben to approve the treasurer’s report as presented. Motion carried.

The budget for the Iowa NACAA was presented by Rich Wrage showing estimated income at $9,525.00 and estimated expenses at $14,600.00 (including Wisconsin BBQ) for an ending balance of $940.42. Motion by Chris Nelson, second by Larry Tranel to accept the budget as presented. Motion carried.

Spring Raffle plans were discussed with Joel DeJong providing leadership with help from the members for securing prizes. The raffle will be held in conjunction with our spring NACAA meeting. Related to this was an offer by Dan Burkhart to auction off 2 tickets to this Saturday’s ISU football game vs. Missouri. Larry McMullen successfully sold them to Neil Wubben for $52.50 with proceeds going to the BBQ Fund.

A report on the AM/PIC was given by Rich Wrage which was held in Savannah, GA in late July, early August, 2003.

Dan Burkhart presented the NC Regional Directors report. He distributed copies of the NC Regional Leadership. He also discussed the NACAA budget, AM/PIC, funding, NACAA credit card, Michigan bid in 2007, the next potential bidding date in 2011 and challenged us to get involved in regional and national NACAA events.

Stan Johnson, Vice-Provost for Extension, addressed the group on the following topics:

Summer tour plans- Kelvin Leibold reported on the tour in Hardin County this past summer. Discussion revolved around the timing of the tour and dates with the AM/PIC in Wisconsin this year. Possibilities included: Reiman Gardens, the Tama Beef plant, the Eddyville ethanol plant.

Spring Meeting- Motion by Steve Johnson, seconded by Neil Wubben to hold the spring NACAA meeting on the evening of March 24, 2003 prior to the Professional Improvement Day on the 25th in Ames. Motion carried.

Rich Wrage gave a brief report on Public Issues Leadership Development (PILD) conference in Washington, DC in May, 2002.

Russ Euken provided and update on the Tuesday Evening BBQ at the AM/PIC in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Lynch BBQ has been secured to provide the cooking services. Donations are expected from the Pork Producers for $1,000; Iowa Select Farms for $250; Swiss Valley for milk; Wells Blue Bunny for Ice Cream; with other possible donors being sought. Sub-committee’s and membership include: Food- Linda Engelken-Fischer, Dan Burkhart; Budget- Russ Euken; Serving and Wisconsin coordination- Larry Tranel; Publicity- Jerry Chizek; Entertainment-Jack Van Laar.

Jim Johnson gave his report to the group. He intends to retire on 1-1-03. He commented on positions that have recently been filled and a staff in-service planned for April 2, 2003. He also commented on the Farm Progress Show, and the need for statistical numbers from the field and Web statistics.

Jim Jensen reported on activities of the P&S Council. He reported on staff benefits and communications between P&S board members and extension staff among other things.

Program Recognition Council

Jerry Chizek, Chair of the communication committee reported that applications from Rich Wrage and Kelvin Leibold were selected as regional winners and considered for national recognition.

Extension Programs - Chris Nelson- No Report

4-H and Youth - Dale Miller reported that they are looking for talented 4-Her’s for the AM/PIC in Green Bay. Please submit nominees to him..

Life Member - No Report

Professional Excellence - Gary Bickmeier- no report

Public Relations - George Cummings- no report

Recognition and Awards - Pat Derdzinski - DSA winners were John Holmes and Gary Bickmeier and AA winner was Gene Mohling


Professional Improvement Council

Agronomy - John Holmes- call for posters, presentations and papers.

Animal Science - Dave Stender- call for posters, presentations and papers.

Ag Economics - Kelvin Leibold- Presentation by Kelvin Leibold was given at AM/PIC in Georgia on Brazilian Soybean production.

Horticulture - Larry Loenser- Gary Bickmeier went on RISE tour.


Extension Development Council

Public Relations and Ag Issues - Steve Johnson - no report

Administrative Skills Development - Bob Dodds - no report

Early Career Development - Darwin Miller - report on mentor program now being established.

Teaching and Communications - Dave Andrews- no report

Public Relations - Ronnie Mitchell - no report


ISUCEP Committees

Member issues and concerns - John Holmes - reports given earlier in day - no additions

Professional Improvement - John Eveland - group met this morning - Prof Imp Day is March 25, 2003

Public Relations - Ron Mitchell - no further additions to reports earlier in the day.

President Fischer handed the gavel to new President Rich Wrage. President Wrage then thanked Engelken-Fisher for her leadership and presented her with a plaque.

Motion to adjourn the meeting by John Creswell and seconded by John Holmes. Motion carried.
