Being from the county with the smallest population in the state, there weren’t a lot of opportunities to meet new people. Even though it was a two hour drive from my home in southwest Iowa, going to camp gave me opportunities and experiences I would have never had if I only attended the day camp my county offered one or two days a summer. Many counties are facing their own harsh budget cuts, and asking them to take on more planning, spend more money and spend more time organizing their own camps at a local level does not help the situation, and in the end it will not help the youth of Iowa.
