This news saddens all who believe in the power of camp to transform a young person’s life, to help build community and teach and reinforce strong values in young people. Parents should be urged not to let their kids miss the camp experience this summer as a result of this change. Up and down the Des Moines River Valley are camps that serve youth, and would be happy to greet campers that have been displaced by this decision. One place to look for these camps is the American Camp Association website: http://find.acacamps.org/. Camps like Camp Hantesa near Boone, offer a traditional camping experience similar to the 4H Center at close to the same reasonable price. To attend, you do not have to be a member, in fact, for the past two years, 4Hers have been going to Hantesa to work with Hantesa’s horse program.
