Forestry Field Day to Highlight Direct Seeding and Stand Conversion
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State University (ISU) Forestry Extension and Iowa DNR foresters will conduct a forestry field day on Friday, June 1, in Des Moines County. The half day event will begin with registration at 8 a.m. at Bob and Deb Brown’s farm, 18502 Golden Road, Yarmouth, Iowa. Introductions begin at 8:30 a.m.
Direct tree seeding techniques will be reviewed on the farm and different row spacings will be highlighted. The machines used to directly seed a variety of tree species will be on hand. Participants will see a bottomland forest planting and discuss the maintenance needs of a 10- to 14-year-old planting. A review of a long-term stand conversion practice done to move the stand towards a desired species composition is included as part of the field day. As always, forestry related cost share programs will be highlighted and questions are welcomed.
To reach the Brown’s farm from Highway 61, travel south of Mediapolis approximately two miles, then west on county road H40 (Pleasant Grove Road) for 5-6 miles to X40 (Beaverdale Road). Travel south on Beaverdale for one-half mile to Golden Road. Travel on Golden Road south less than one mile to 18502 Golden Road.
To reach the farm from Highway 218/Highway 34 at Mt. Pleasant, travel east on Highway 34 to County Road X31 (Danville Road). Travel north on Danville Road to County Road H40. Travel east on H40 less than two miles to Beaverdale Road, then south on Beaverdale Road for one-half mile to Golden Road. Travel less than one mile to 18502 Golden Road.
This program is free to all, but registration is encouraged. Register by calling 319-523-2216 or 319-523-6411, ext. 3 by May 28. The day will officially end at noon with more farm tours available for those that want to stay. Participants should dress for outdoor conditions.
