AMES, Iowa — The growing number of adults reaching traditional retirement age and beyond presents new challenges and opportunities for Iowa communities as well as the state as a whole. To help Iowans make informed decisions as they head toward retirement, family finance specialists within Iowa State University Extension and Outreach have revised the "Retirement: Secure Your Future" publication series. It is now available for download from the ISU Extension and Outreach online store.
"Retirement: Secure Your Future" consists of 16 publications designed to provide adults of all ages an opportunity to begin thinking about their future. The new series offers information for consideration from basic financial planning, to making retirement plans early and dealing with possible legal issues one could face in later life.
“If you are age 20, you may be thinking down the road 50 years and your main goal is to begin saving and investing for your future,” said Ruth Freeman, an ISU Extension and Outreach family finance specialist who helped to revise the publications. “If you are within five years or less of retirement, you have many decisions to consider.”
Some publications within the series include worksheets that consider early, mid and late retirement needs, such as an income planner and an expense worksheet that provides detailed help. “We challenge people to make their own informed decisions,” said Freeman.
Freeman explained that along with the printed materials available on the store, the family finance specialists are developing lessons that they will teach around the state to those who are early in their career, mid-career and getting close to retirement.
There also are plans to develop web recordings called ‘Mini Mods’ that will be placed on both the retirement and midlife websites this fall, giving Iowans the option to listen to retirement advice when it works for them.
"Retirement: Secure Your Future" can be found on the Extension store website and is a cost-free download.
