Renewing Your Certification

Option 1:

One way to renew your certification is to attend a private applicators’ continuing instruction course (CIC) each of the three years during your renewal cycle.

To find out when you need to re-certify, check the mailing label for your certification number and expiration date.  Then follow the directions for your expiration date in this brochure.

Example Label:

Œ1) 305712    2) 12/31/13       3) Ž85

Stevens, Robert L.
412 Lakeside Dr.
Ames, IA  50010

Œ 1)  305712 is the certification number.

     * 1st digit of number is expiration year (example: 3 = 2013 expiration)
     * Numeric 2nd digit (0) indicates test was taken for certification.
     * If 2nd digit is alphabetic (2A5712), renewal occurred by attending CIC program.

  2)  12/31/13 is the expiration date.

  3)  ŽThe number 85 is the county number.

To Re-certify with 2013 Expiration

If your certification expires December 31, 2013, AND you attended CIC programs in BOTH 2011–2012 and 2012–2013, you can attend a CIC program between December 2013 and April 15, 2014.

To Re-certify with 2014 Expiration

If your certification expires December 31, 2014, and you attended a CIC program for 2012–2013, you can attend a CIC program for 2013–2014 and 2014-2015.

To Recertify with 2015 Expiration

If you wish to recertify by training and not by exam, you must attend a CIC session each year, starting with the 2013-2014 program year.

Option 2:

A second way to renew is to pass the certification test every three years. If you miss one year of CIC programs, Iowa law requires you to retest when your certification expires.  The exam is given by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS). If you score 70% or more on the exam and pay a $15 fee, you will be certified for 3 years.
