The new year is a time of new beginnings, but beef feedlot producers know that much of their future is quite uncertain. To help them learn more about what they need to know and the decisions they need to make, these issues -- Veterinary Feed Directive, feedlot assessments, market volatility, market prices and industry updates -- will be center stage at Feedlot Forum 2017. Feedlot Forum 2017 is set for Tuesday, Jan. 17, at the Terrace View Event Center in Sioux Center, and opens with a trade show at 8:30 a.m.

The 2017 Crop Advantage Series offers a unique opportunity for farmers and crop advisors to hear current research and crop production information from Iowa State University in their own backyard. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach specialists will travel to 14 locations around Iowa from Jan. 4-Jan. 27, providing updated management options and recommendations on current and future crop production issues. In addition, meetings will also offer continuing educations credits for Certified Crop Advisers (CCA) and pesticide safety recertification.

Area 4-H members are invited to join other 4-H youth from Sioux, Lyon, Osceola, O'Brien, Plymouth and Cherokee Counties for a fun day of swimming, skating, food, friends and fun activities on Dec. 28 from noon to 4:00 p.m. at the All-Season Center in Sioux Center.

Area sheep producers are invited to come learn about new research in sheep nutrition and how the Veterinary Feed Directive will affect them at the Feeding Ewes and Feedlot Lambs meeting on Dec. 13 at the Pizza Ranch in Sheldon, IA. The meeting will start with a buffet dinner at 6:00 p.m., followed by a short business meeting conducted by Shane Kirschten, president of the Northwest Iowa Sheep Producers Association.

Cow-calf producers who want to learn more about improving the return from their enterprise are invited to a strategy-focused workshop hosted by the Iowa Beef Center and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Mapleton on Wednesday, Dec. 14. ISU Extension and Outreach beef program specialist Beth Doran said this meeting is the first in a statewide series set for this winter, and will include a variety of topics that relate to feeding and marketing.
