2004 Case Field #2

July 1, 2004

Crawford County, Iowa
Crop - Corn
Plant Height = 30 inches

Is this possibly Bacterial or Pythium stalk rot????

This plant was picked yesterday (Wednesday) and I stopped in at a COOP (on my way to another field, different problem)  to look at it, so it is a little dryer than a newly picked plant.  Note the discoloration at the base of the plant.  The mesocotyl appeared to be diseased and was dry and shriveled (maybe infection moved in from mesocotyl).  The condition of the plant/leaves was difficult to analyze since it had been sitting on a desk for a day.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful
