Zinc
Zinc is required for the synthesis of protein and DNA, the regulation of muscle contractions and the formation of the hormone insulin. It also aids wound healing and prostate gland function in men.
In addition, zinc may reduce the risk of cancer of the esophagus, lungs and prostate gland. Zinc is essential for the proper function of the immune system and to maintain a sense of taste.
The following people may have poor zinc intakes:
-
Teenagers
-
Heavy alcohol drinkers
-
Men with fertility problems
-
Breastfeeding women
-
People with hormonal imbalances
-
Vegetarians
To increase dietary zinc, consume more meats, legumes, nuts and seafood.
Caution
Zinc is toxic in high doses. The symptoms of zinc toxicity are vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness and high blood cholesterol levels. High dose zinc supplements may upset the body's normal mineral balance and lead to copper and/or iron deficiency.
Taking more than 800 milligrams of zinc is toxic.
Note: Oral contraceptives can reduce levels of stored zinc.
