Acidophilus

Acidophilus, or Lactobacillus acidophilus, are classified as a probiotics that help keep the intestinal tract healthy. Acidophilus is known as “good” bacteria because it can take the place of harmful bacteria in the digestive system. This action may be important in keeping a healthy immune system and a normal-functioning gut.

Dosage

There is no specific dose recommended for the acidophilus supplement. However, when purchasing and consuming probiotic products such as yogurt with active cultures, it is best to consume the product when it is at its freshest. This is because the amount of good bacteria decreases with time.

Evidence for Health Benefits

There have been several human and animal studies that have looked at the effects of acidophilus and other probiotics. The results showed that the consumption of probiotics helped the immune system recognize and destroy harmful microorganisms. This is because the number of white blood cells and other immune-fighting cells increased.

Epidemiological studies have shown that consuming probiotics may decrease the risk of colon cancer. Specifically, in vitro (or test tube) studies have shown that acidophilus acts to decrease the cancer-causing potential of carcinogens. Acidophilus has also been shown to decrease the number of cancer-causing enzymes in the digestive tract.

Cautions

There are no side effects from taking acidophilus or other probiotics. However, those with stomach or intestinal problems such as Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative colitis should talk with a doctor before consuming probiotic products.
