Note DetailIndex Reaches El Niño Level
12/16/2009 10:23:00 PM

After a summer of hearing that El Niño was “in
place” the event actually took place today (16
December 2009), at least the 90-day Index (SOI)
reached the “Clinically Proven” value of -0.8
standard deviations (the Australians simply call
it “-8”). Bottom Line: expect Jan-March to be on
the dry side of usual in the valley of the Ohio
River and the temperature to average a bit above
usual across the Corn Belt. For next summer, no
estimate as most researchers feel the event will be
short lived. - Elwynn -
