Have Adventures with Cy and Fun with 4-H at the Iowa State Fair



AMES, Iowa – Visitors to the Iowa State Fair Aug. 7-17 may venture with Cy around the fairgrounds to learn more about Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, as well as enjoy the exhibits of thousands of Iowa youth who participate in 4-H Youth Development.

#CyAdventuresFans featuring Cy, Iowa State University’s mascot, will be available at the Bruce L. Rastetter 4-H Exhibits Building and Grandfather’s Barn. Fairgoers are encouraged to take selfies with their Cy fan at eight Extension and Outreach and partner locations around the fairgrounds. They may share their photos on Twitter and Facebook for a chance to win an iPad.

The locations are the Bruce L. Rastetter 4-H Exhibits Building, Iowa State University exhibit in the Varied Industries Building, Grandfather’s Barn Wine Experience, Poultry and Rabbit Building, Master Gardeners’ Discovery Garden, 4-H Safety and Education in Shooting Sports at the Department of Natural Resources Building, Service Center sponsored by Register Media, and the ISU Extension and Outreach sculpture. A sign or flag will mark each location and describe the connection to ISU Extension and Outreach.

In addition, Cy will participate in a celebrity grape stomp Aug. 14 at Grandfather’s Barn.

Wear Iowa State Gear

Extension and Outreach will be encouraging fairgoers, via social media, to wear their cardinal and gold Iowa State gear on Saturday, Aug 9.

4-H Youth Development at the Iowa State Fair

4-H Youth Development  is headquartered at Iowa State University and available through ISU Extension and Outreach offices in all Iowa counties. This year some 2,000 4-H’ers will be showing 3,000 livestock entries at various State Fair venues. The 4-H Exhibits Building will feature nearly 4,000 exhibits from 2,800 4-H members, as well as more than 900 communication event performances involving more than 1,800 4-H youth.

Special events in the 4-H Exhibits Building include the following:

  • 4-H Cook This! Finale is Aug. 7. Thirteen teams of youth in grades 5-12 will compete in the final event of this culinary challenge.
  • CME Commodity Carnival is Aug. 8-16. This new, interactive game walks young people through the steps of bringing steers and cattle to market.
  • The North Central STEM Hub Festival is Aug. 8.
  • Bratney Company 4-H Robotics Challenge is Aug. 10 and 11. Nine youth teams will demonstrate their robot designing and programming skills in this real-time challenge.
  • The 4-H Hall of Fame Induction is Aug. 17. Eighty-two Iowa counties are participating this year and 110 inductees will be recognized for their outstanding service and dedication to 4-H.

A photo booth will be available in the 4-H Exhibits Building on certain days and times and will feature the 4-H STEM ad and props. Visitors may have their photo taken and tag themselves on Twitter and Facebook for a chance to win an iPad mini.

Awardrobe Clothing Event at Iowa State Campus

The Iowa State Fair 2014 Awardrobe Clothing Event is set for Aug. 15-16 at the Memorial Union on the Iowa State University campus. In this event 4-H'ers participate in educational workshops on fashion trends; higher education opportunities in clothing, fashion and textiles; and careers in fashion and design. They are judged on their understanding and use of design elements and principles in Clothing Selection, Fashion Revue or The $15 Challenge, and model their garments in a public runway show.

Find Food with Food Finder App

Extension and Outreach again will provide nutrition information and designate healthy events through the State Fair Food Finder Mobile App . This three-year partnership with the Des Moines Register saw more than 24,000 downloads and 1.3 million page views in 2013.
