DONNELLSON, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach are again joining forces to present the Annual Forestry Field Day in Lee County on Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The day will get under way with registration and a tree identification walking tour, both taking place at the Ron and Carol Fullenkamp Tree Farm near West Point. The walking tour will be hosted by Jesse Randall, forester with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. The field day program will begin promptly at 9 a.m. with a history of the Fullenkamp’s tree farm.
Private woodland owners, public land managers, forestry consultants and service providers, and interested citizens will find the agenda filled with a number of new topics, plus previous field day topics that are priorities for woodland owners. One new feature will be the construction of a stream crossing in the timber. Steve Armstrong, owner of Armstrong Small Engines, will be operating equipment on the site, demonstrating the various steps taken while Gren Brenneman, agricultural engineer with ISU Extension and Outreach, will discuss the process and reasons behind each step.
Other topics to be addressed during field day sessions include: erosion control options, control of invasive plants, chainsaw sharpening the Oregon® way, tree pruning, walnuts – nuts, trees, management, timber harvest and natural regeneration – and pond and fish management. Wendy Wintersteen, dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, will be a special noontime guest as she tours southeast Iowa.
Attendees are encouraged to bring questions, share experiences with fellow participants and take advantage of the resource professionals who will be presenting throughout the day. The goal of the field day is to make attendees more knowledgeable about how to manage tree resources for their many benefits, and more specifically, one’s own forested property. Attendees should dress appropriately for the weather as the presentations and demonstrations will take place outdoors.
Pre-registration by Sept. 28 is requested. Pre-register by contacting the Lee County Extension Office at 319 835-5116 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. The registration fee is $15 per person and can be paid the day of the event.
