AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University Extension is offering a new, comprehensive educational program that teaches the science of horse management along with riding and training concepts. The Master Equine Manager program combines discussion with hands-on experience. People who complete the six, three-hour core curriculum sessions and two optional interest-specific sessions will become certified Master Equine Managers.

Dale Miller, Marion County Extension Education Director, developed the program along with others to enhance the growing horse industry in Iowa. "Iowa State University (ISU) Extension is offering the first Master Equine Manager program of its kind in Iowa and the Midwest. Neighboring states are already interested in partnering with ISU Extension to make the program available to residents in their states," said Miller. The program will initially be offered in central Iowa starting Feb. 5, 2005 and is limited to 20 participants. Miller expects the program to eventually be offered in other locations throughout Iowa and the Midwest at a later date.

Miller designed the Master Equine Manager Program to inform and educate people on quality horse care and responsible horse ownership. He also believes the program will impact the quality and economic growth of the Iowa horse industry. Program instructors are considered experts in their field and include professionals from academic, research and business. The six core topics include nutrition and feeding; health care; selection and evaluation; facilities and equipment; exercise and conditioning; and hoof care.

Participants will receive certification and must be willing to share their skills and knowledge with others. Continuing Education Units are available upon request.

The program costs $500 and includes refreshments, materials, instructors, facilities and certification. For more information or to register for the Master Equine Manager program, contact Dale Miller at (641) 842-2014 or dmill@iastate.edu or visit http://www.ucs.iastate.edu/mnet/equine/about.html.
