Iowa 4-H Family Welcomes Exchange Student from Germany
AMES, Iowa -- An exchange student from Germany in the International 4-H Youth Exchange Representative (IFYE) program is visiting Albert City Oct. 16 through Nov. 7. Anne Catharine Schöningh, 21, is staying with Lynn and Jerolyn Wenell and their children Lewis, 16, Reuben, 13, and Brice, 11. The IFYE program is one of many offered by Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development.
"We like to meet new people and get to know them and what their culture and family is like," Jerolyn Wenell said. "We like to expose our kids to new people and cultures and share our lives and family with others." The Wenells have served as IFYE hosts three times prior to this year.
Schöningh has lived on a farm for her entire life and has been a member of the German group, Young Farmers, for four years. She will visit three Iowa families between now and Dec. 3. She also will stay with host families in Van Buren and Mahaska counties.
IFYE program participants visit the United States from Europe, Latin America, Australia, Asia and Africa to live and work with several host families for three to six weeks. Participants are expected to participate in daily American life. They interact with host organizations, which are similar to 4-H.
"We feel this program is important because it provides Iowa families an opportunity to learn about another culture first hand," Brenda Allen, state program 4-H specialist, said. "You also learn more about yourself when you share your culture with others."
For more information about IFYE and future host opportunities, contact your county extension office or Brenda Allen at the state ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development office at (515) 294-1567.
