Iowa 4-H Family Welcomes Exchange Student from Germany

AMES, Iowa -- An exchange student from Germany in the International 4-H Youth Exchange Representative (IFYE) program will visit Oskaloosa Nov. 8 through Dec. 1. Anne Catharine Schöningh, 21, will stay with Matt and Amy Nahnsen and their daughter Lilly. The IFYE program is one of many offered by Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development.

"International exchanges are fun and educational and are one of the best ways for people to learn," Amy Nahnsen said. The Nahnsens have been IFYE hosts since 1992.
Schöningh has lived on a farm for her entire life and has been a member of the German group, Young Farmer, for four years. She will visit three Iowa families between now and Dec. 3. She also will stay with host families in Van Buren and Pocahontas counties.

IFYE program participants visit the United States from Europe, Latin America, Australia, Asia and Africa to live and work with several host families for three to six weeks. Participants are expected to participate in daily American life. They interact with host organizations, which are similar to 4-H.

"We feel this program is important because it provides Iowa families an opportunity to learn about another culture first hand," Brenda Allen, state program 4-H specialist, said. "You also learn more about yourself when you share your culture with others."

For more information about IFYE and future host opportunities, contact your county extension office or Brenda Allen at the state ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development office at (515) 294-1567.
