Iowa 4-H Family Welcomes Exchange Student from Germany

AMES, Iowa -- An exchange student from Germany in the International 4-H Youth Exchange Representative (IFYE) program visited Douds Sept. 17 through Oct. 16. Anne Catharine Schöningh, 21, stayed with Raymond and Sheri Moore and their daughter Cassidy, 14. The IFYE program is one of many offered by Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development.

"We felt this would be a good experience for all of us," Sheri Moore said. "It gave us a chance to learn about the exchange student's culture as well as share ours." This is the first time the Moore family has served as hosts in the IFYE program.

Schöningh has lived on a farm for her entire life and has been a member of the German group, Young Farmers, for four years. She will visit three Iowa families between Sept. 17 and Dec. 3. She also will stay with host families in Mahaska and Pocahontas counties.

IFYE program participants visit the United States from Europe, Latin America, Australia, Asia and Africa to live and work with several host families for three to six weeks. Participants are expected to participate in daily American life. They interact with host organizations, which are similar to 4-H.

"We feel this program is important because it provides Iowa families an opportunity to learn about another culture first hand," Brenda Allen, state program 4-H specialist, said. "You also learn more about yourself when you share your culture with others."

For more information about IFYE and future host opportunities, contact your county extension office or Brenda Allen at the state ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development office at (515) 294-1567.
