Iowa 4-H Foundation Announces President's Campaign

AMES, Iowa - The Iowa 4-H Foundation announces a fundraising effort for the 4-H youth development program in Iowa. The President's Campaign features a matching challenge grant offered by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. in Johnston, Iowa.

"Pioneer will match 50 cents for every dollar donated to the President's Campaign," said Florine Swanson, executive director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation. "Together, our goal is to raise $450,000 for 4-H by the end of this year."

The President's Campaign was initiated by Michael Gumina when he was president of the Iowa 4-H Foundation. The campaign targets five areas of financial need identified by 4-H program staff. Funds will support statewide volunteer leader development, 4-H after-school programs, a new road to the Iowa 4-H (camping) Center, state recognition awards for youth and financial assistance for youth delegates to attend National 4-H Congress.

Gumina, vice president of Supply Management at Pioneer, acknowledges the long-term benefits of this campaign. "One of the best investments we can make for the future is the development of young people," he said, "The 4-H youth program is an effective way to teach young people valuable life skills that prepare them to be productive adults and good citizens."

Current president Jim Patton said that contributing to this campaign allows Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development to continue serving its traditional 4-H youth and allows the program to expand its service to a more diverse audience including home-school students, after-school programs, and ethnic populations.

Contributors have until Dec. 31, 2004, to make a charitable gift to the President's Campaign and qualify for the Pioneer match. For more information about the campaign, contact the Iowa 4-H Foundation at 515-294-1537 or visit the organization's Web site at http://www.iowa4hfoundation.org.
